Joe is writing a new commission for 'Substance - in Remembrance of Tony Wilson' - a
special evening at Manchester International Festival celebrating the legacy of Tony Wilson

"New Order take over Stage 1 of Manchester’s iconic Old Granada Studios for this special
series of intimate shows, created in collaboration with two close associates: visual artist
Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain
and MoMA in New York; and composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester
and a frequent collaborator with the band.
For New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes.., the group will be deconstructing, rethinking and
rebuilding a wealth of material from throughout their career: familiar and obscure, old and
new. To perform it live, they’ll be joined by a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the
Royal Northern College of Music, with Joe Duddell providing the orchestrations.
Inspired by this reinvention of the band’s catalogue, Liam Gillick will be transforming the
historic Stage 1 into an immersive environment, creating a stage set that reacts

Joe is taking his Town Hall Sessions from Festival No. 6 to Tate Britain on Fri 3rd March.
Part of a special one-night festival 'Festival No. 6 x Tate' will include performances from Joe

Joe has announced a one-off show with Steve Mason at the Barbican in London on Friday
27th January. The specially commissioned career retrospective will explore Steve's back
catalogue from King Biscuit Time to the Beta Band to his 3 solo albums (including Meet
The Humans) and feature Steve's band with classical ensemble comprising string quartet,

Joe will be joining New Order and the Australian Chamber Orchestra for two exclusive
performances at Sydney Opera House for VividLIVE in June. This world-first collaboration
takes place on 2 and 4 June and will be the band's first performance with a live orchestra.

Joe joined Gaz Coombes with a classical ensemble for a surprise performance for Gaz's 'In
The Round' performance at The Roundhouse London on Jan 28th. The set featured 8
songs and an encore performance of '5 years' in tribute to David Bowie.
Joe joined Alison Moyet at the British Fashion Awards on 18 Nov for a reprise of their
celebrated Burberry performance in September. Alison performed 'Only You' with a small
ensemble whilst a catwalk show of the fashion year took place.

Burberry commissioned Joe to write a 20 minute set for their AW16 Womenswear Show at
London Fashion Week. Working with songs from celebrated British singer Alison Moyet
Joe and Burberry Music Director, Dave Chase curated a 4 song soundtrack which was
performed live with Alison and a 32 piece orchestra as the prestigious event. Songs were:
All Cried Out, Whispering Your Name, When I Was Your Girl and Only You. Watch the full

Joe has added an extra act to his Town Hall residency at Festival no. 6. Old friends Tim,
Jim & Saul from James (who Joe worked with back in 2011 on their celebrated orchestra
tour) will be joining the No. 6 Ensemble for a special one-off set.
Artists from the St Anthony video have shared a series of personal stories about Tony
Wilson. Includes stories from Peter Saville, Richard Madeley, Shaun Ryder, Rowetta,
Christopher Ecclestone, Miranda Sawyer, Marc Riley, Elliot Rashman, John Bramwell,
John Robb, Johnny Jay, Mark Radcliffe, Paul Morely and Andrew Weatherall. Watch all the

the 9 minute track being available on both the CD and vinyl, students from Salford
University's BA Graphic Designs course have also recut the video, adding a host of extra

Joe has written string arrangements for Music Complete - the new album from New Order

Joe's residency at Festival No. 6 has been announced. This year he'll be collaborating with
Gaz Coombes, Rae Morris, Edwyn Collins and Jane Weaver. They will be performing with
the No. 6 Ensemble in Portmeirion Town Hall 4/5/6 September.
Joe has orchestrated a 15 song set for LA musician Pat Grossi who performs under the
name of Active Child. The first performance will be at Millenium Park in Chicago on 22nd
September with the award winning Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Joe has orchestrated a special set for Burberry for their S/S16 Menswear Show. The 15
minute show featured UK artist Rhodes and a 24 piece orchestra. Rhodes performed 2
covers (Vienna & I Put A Spell On You) and 2 of his own songs (Breathe & Close To You).
Joe put on a surprise collaboration with Edwyn Collins for delegates at Liverpool Sound
City. Closing Edwyn's keynote the 3 song set featured a string quartet from Up North
Session Orchestra performing specially written arrangements of Leviathan, Low
Expectations and Forsooth. Edwyn was accompanied on guitar by Carwyn Ellis.
The album launch for Cathal Smyth's solo album 'A Comfortable Man' is on 14 May at Bush
Hall in London. Cathal will be performing alongside Joe's 10 piece ensemble and 8 piece

Joe is back working with BBC Philharmonic orchestra on a new collaboration with Clean
Bandit. The performance will be broadcast live from the BBC Phil's studio in Salford on

performing a 30 min set in the beautiful setting of the Castell Gardens in Portmeirion. More
Joe has been elected to be made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music which is
awarded to ‘past students who have distinguished themselves in the music profession and
made a significant contribution to it in their particular field.’
The BBC Philharmonic are to play and record Joe’s Azelea Fragments at Media City in
Salford which was originally commissioned by the LSO in 2008. The piece will be
broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at a future date.
Burberry are to re-record Joe’s string quartet arrangement for ‘Walls’ with Rae Morris for
their Burburry Prorsum Womenswear Autumn/Winter 2012 Show.
Mike Joyce has a world exclusive world play of two tracks from the recent ‘An Evening With
James’ tour. The tracks will air on The Radcliffe & Maconey show on BBC 6Music on Jan
2nd between 2 and 4pm. Orchestrations were written by Joe and feature Orchestra of the
Swan & The Manchester Consort Choir. Mike will be playing the orchestral versions of
Alaskan Pipeline & She’s A Star.
Joe will be joining Jimi Goodwin and The Ghosts of Gone Birds ensemble on stage on 10th
Nov for a live performance of The Bird Effect at Rich Mix in London. Ghost Night Out is part

The Bird Effect by Jimi Goodwin for Ghost of Gone Birds is to be broadcast live on Marc
Riley’s BBC 6Music show on 18 Nov between 7 and 9pm.
James have released a viral you-tube video of a new orchestration for their song ‘Top of
the World’ which was filmed during an early workshop for the forthcoming national tour
back in July 2010. The video features The Manchester Consort who will be providing a 16
piece choir for the tour together with a 23 piece ensemble from Orchestra of the Swan.

Nero are to release their symphony collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic orchestra &
Joe Duddell on the de-luxe version of their debut album Welcome Reality. The track,
available only on i-tunes only, will be available for download from 15 August.
Presteigne Festival commission a Magnificat for choir & organ. Performed by the Choir of
Royal Holloway & recorded for broadcast on the BBC Radio 3 ‘Choir’ programme.
Dame Evelyn Glennie plays Snowblind at Cheltenham Festival in an all British composer
programme also featuring a premiere by Joe’s former teacher and mentor Steve Martland.
James announce a 10 date orchestral tour with Joe Duddell, Orchestra of the Swan and
The Manchester Consort Choir. Joe will be delving into the band’s 20 year back catalogue
to create about 30 new orchestrations. The two-part set will be performed at some of the
UK’s most prestigious classical venues culminating at The Royal Albert Hall on Nov 4th.

Joe is to collaborate with dubstep pioneers Nero in a special commission for The BBC
Philharmonic Presents season celebrating the launch of Media City in Salford. The one-off
performance of ‘Dubstep Symphony’ will be aired live on Zane Lowe on Radio 1 on 6 June
with a worldwide webstream on 1extra.

Joe is to travel to Portugal with James to conduct ‘Orquestra das Beiras’ in a special one-
off performance for the 75th anniversary of Radio Renascenca. The concert taking place
on 6 June at Boavista Football Stadium features 4 new arrangements with a live
webstream on RR.pt.com.
Joe is to collaborate with Jimi Goodwin from Doves on a special composition called ‘The
Bird Effect’ written for ‘Ghosts of Gone Birds’. The piece will be premiered at Liverpool
School of Art & Design on 12 May. The GOGB Ensemble comprises Jimi Goodwin, Jake
Evans, Joe Roberts & 11 players from RNCM and will be conducted by Joe.
Joe is to collaborate with Rae Morris & Mechanical Bride for the launch of The Sharp
Project and opening of 80 Hertz Studios. 4 new arrangements will be recorded with a string
quartet of players from the Hallé Orchestra with a live studio performance to a small invited
audience. Performances will filmed by The Boot Room and shared in HD on vimeo.

The Bliss Trust have awarded Joe a Scholarship for study in the USA at Princeton with
Grammy Award winning composer Steve Mackey.
Elbow have decided to start all live tour dates with Joe’s Interlude No.1 from the Hallé
collaboration for MIF from 2009. The piece, composed by Joe, segues into The Birds from
their recent Build a Rocket Boys album.
Tipping Point have awarded Joe & composer Craig Vear a commission to work on a Digital
Opera about climate change. The piece will include found sound recorded in Antartica
overlaid onto an orchestral score, with visuals created by Soup Collective.
Manchester indie legends James invited Joe & The Manchester Consort Choir to join them
onstage at MEN Arena for the finale of their 2010 tour. They performed 6 new
arrangements - Look Away, Tell Her I Said So, Got The Shakes, Dust Motes & Gold Mother
The Reads commissioned 5 string & brass arrangements for their debut album Stories
From The Border - produced by Jim Spencer & recorded at Eve Studios, Stockport. Joe’s

Elbow have enlisted the help of Joe to notate choir arrangements for their new album Build
A Rocket Boys. He will be conducting the recordings at Blueprint Studios with The Hallé
Dame Evelyn Glennie takes Joe’s Snowblind for solo percussion & strings on tour of
Canada with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Far East with the City Chamber
Orchestra of Hong Kong.
A new piece ‘All Stars Aligned’ for Violin and Piano commissioned by and premiered at the
Presteigne Festival played by Thomas Gould (Aurora Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia) and
acclaimed pianist Tom Poster.
Colin Currie is to play Joe’s percussion concerto Ruby with the BBC Philharmonic
Orchestra on Wednesday 25 November. The recording will take place at 7pm in Studio 7 at
the BBC, Oxford Road Manchester and will be broadcast soon on Radio 3. Further details
Joe is to team up with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra for Versus Cancer charity gig. He
will be orchestrating and conducting a special acoustic collaboration for legendary
Manchester band James. Joined on stage by members of The BBC Philharmonic
orchestra, and Peter Hook (bassist from Joy Division & New Order) the 40 min set will form
part of the Versus Cancer concert at MEN arena on 12 December. Tickets available from
Joe has been invited to sit on ‘In The City’ panel, speaking alongside Paul Hardcastle and
Helienne Lindvall at the Manchester music conference In the City. The panel, entitled
‘Composing with the artist and for different media’ takes place on Tues 20th October at the
Midland Hotel, Manchester.
Elbow and the Hallé gets breathtaking reviews. Joe’s collaboration with two Manchester
giants, Elbow and the Hallé Orchestra, has received widespread critical acclaim across the
board. Described by the band as “the two best nights of our life”, the now legendary
performances took place at the Bridgewater Hall as part of Manchester International
The Manchester International Festival has commissioned Joe to orchestrate songs from
Elbow’s back catalogue. Joe will also be conducting the two concerts at the Bridgewater
Hall in July 2009.
Joe nominated for The Best of Manchester Awards 2009. These annual art, music and
fashion awards spotlight the boundary-breaking, genre defying kind of work for which
Manchester has long been renowned. This year’s music awards are to be judged by a
panel of industry experts that includes Carline Elleray, Head of A&R at Universal and Luke
Bainbridge, Deputy Editor at the Observer Music Monthly.
Tree Carving to be premiered at ‘Sound Census’. The Endymion Ensemble are celebrating
30 Years with a series of concerts including new commissions from leading British
composers. This new piece for Flute, Viola and Harp will receive its world premiere on
Friday 5th June at King’s Place, London.
Catch to be premiered by world class duo. Possibly the world’s best trumpeter and
percussionist , Hakan Hardenberger and Colin Currie have formed a duo. Joe has written
a new piece for their concerts which will receive it’s world premier in Hamburg and
Manchester in May 2009.
